This publication is a report of the consultation on proposed changes to the constitution order of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The report covers the size of governing councils, the terms of office for council members and a number of transitional provisions.

Initially, the consultation proposed that the governing council of the NMC should be reduced from 14 to 8 members and that the maximum period for which a member of the council may serve be extended to 8 years in any 20 years. The aim of these changes was to allow the council to focus on strategic leadership and decision making and to hold the executive to account.

Twenty three responses were received from a range of organisations and individuals including professional bodies, regulatory bodies, unions and educators. After consideration of the responses, it was decided to reduce the council of the NMC to 12 members, rather than to 8 members. The orders making the amendments have been laid in Parliament.

The consultation ran from 8 May to 31 July 2012; read the consultation on proposed changes to the NMC constitution.
